What can acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture is one facet of Chinese medicine, and Chinese medicine is a complete system of medicine. That means it has a treatment approach to, well, everything. Another way to see it is that Chinese medicine is an ancient system of healthcare used to treat everyday discomfort, acute and chronic pain, mild and serious diseases, and all realms of mental and emotional disease.
Acupuncture is especially equipped to help you handle change in everyday life, offering support through the little stuff like a head cold, and the big stuff like major surgeries or significant life transitions.
An added (and beautiful) bonus of acupuncture is that it works with you to find your best health. It helps you be in tune, aware, present with your body and your emotions. This awareness enables you to take better care of yourself and be less symptomatic.
Acupuncture uses needles, right? Doesn't that hurt?
Yes, acupuncture uses needles, but they’re not the needles you might be imagining. Acupuncture needles are very thin, flexible, and solid. Thick, hollow needles are used to give shots and draw blood – in acupuncture we’re doing neither, so our needles are different! Also, the style of insertion used in acupuncture is very different than the often painful sensation of “dry needling.”Often people don't even feel the needles inserted. Rather you might feel something like pressure, or an ache or tickle near the point of insertion – that sensation is your body’s qi (pronounced “chee”) rising to action.
How often will I need to get acupuncture?
Depending on their current health and goals, some people receive acupuncture more than once a week, while others come monthly. Others come on an “as needed” basis, spread out over whatever time is appropriate.
It’s not uncommon for acupuncture to immediately offer relief. We often see this in instances of pain, for example. But acupuncture is not a numbing agent, and therefore doesn’t always behave the same way.
In general, an acute issue resolves more quickly than one that has been in place for a long time. When an issue is chronic, there are many factors that contribute to its chronicity and shifting those conditions takes time. That being said, there have been many times that chronic issues have resolved quickly with acupuncture.

I’m not very fit; can I do Pilates?
Yes! We love working with clients of all ages, all athletic abilities, any range of fitness level, regardless of physical or other limitations. We tailor your individual sessions and small group classes to suit your needs, discuss your goals, offer appropriate challenges, and help you find a connection between mind and body.
If you are seeking to gain fitness, Pilates is a very effective and safe way to do it. Pilates teaches you about yourself, your posture, and how to improve your mechanics in everyday life to have a positive impact on your overall health.
Joseph Pilates called this system of movement “intelligent exercise.” This means that Pilates is made to work intelligently with your body. That’s what makes it safe, customized, and exactly what you need it to be.
You say you offer “classical” Pilates? What makes it “classical,” and how is that distinct from other types?
All Pilates is definitely not the same!
When Joseph Pilates developed his method of exercise, he did not trademark the name “Pilates.” As a result, there is a very wide range of teacher trainings, teacher qualifications, and styles of instruction all legally called “Pilates.”
We teach classical Pilates, a system that is rooted in the original style of Joseph Pilates. Classical training studies the material in three systems (basic, intermediate, advanced) and then customizes that framework to meet you, the client, where you are. This level of training is what enables us to truly individualize your workout – to help you safely get stronger.
Our approach keeps you moving, considers your entire body, and will challenge you to build strength and flexibility in a very safe way. Some other styles of Pilates involve smaller “micro” movements, and others focus on very specific body parts. Our style is a holistic system; it’s a whole body movement approach!
The principles and exercises of Pilates are lifelong work, and this is what makes Pilates an art, a way of moving through the world.
Why are there so many different Pilates session and class types?
You can practice Pilates in many different ways at Clasique, because different people have different needs and goals. Many clients do a combination of private sessions and group classes. It all depends of your goals, your body, what works for you, and – most importantly – what you enjoy!
Here’s how it works:
Private sessions are one-on-one with you and your instructor. In semi-private sessions, between two and four people workout together with an instructor. Private and semi-private sessions are the best opportunity to get a very customized workout, utilize all the equipment in the studio, become somewhat self-directed in your workout, and really focus on your personal goals and needs.
Group classes use the mat and/or Pilates equipment, and are led by an instructor. Group classes are a great way to gain strength, flexibility, and overall fitness. All participants in a group class flow through the same workout together on equipment, or without equipment (in the case of mat classes and Chisel™.)
Group class workouts aren’t completely customized to your needs, but you do still get hands-on and verbal feedback from the instructor during the class. Group classes are most effective once you understand the equipment, your body, and the Pilates work. Gaining this understanding happens best by beginning with private and semi-private sessions.
What is your teacher-training program like? Are you currently accepting apprentices?
Training to be a Pilates instructor at Clasique with Brooke Tyler is a true one-on-one mentorship. It is super comprehensive, of course challenging, and will teach you to become a remarkable, talented Pilates instructor.
During the Clasique Pilates Instructor Certification Program (CPICP), apprentices and masters apprentices learn the deep subtleties of how to read people – learning the art of movement, understanding injuries and modifications for clients with varying needs, and learning how to embody the Pilates method in their own workouts and teaching postures.
Brooke's mentor is renowned instructor Dorothee VandeWalle in Seattle. Joseph Pilates trained Romana Kryzanowska, Romana trained Dorothee, Dorothee trained Brooke, and now Brooke trains you! It's a beautiful lineage and an intense program, preserving the art of the classical Pilates work.

Are either Pilates or acupuncture appropriate for kids?
Yes, they both are! From toddlers, to kids, and then teenagers, both Pilates and acupuncture teach self-awareness.
Using the tools of both Pilates and acupuncture, we teach kids to be connected to their bodies and in tune with their emotions. We offer custom Pilates sessions that help kids with alignment and posture issues, and build strength and flexibility where they need it most.
With a variety of tools of Chinese medicine – not necessarily needles – we are able to treat acute or chronic issues ranging from emotional or behavioral struggles, digestive or respiratory issues, skin complaints, trouble sleeping, and more.
We also love working with whole families. Often times, that begins with working with women on fertility with Chinese medicine. Acupuncture and Pilates can support you through pregnancy, into labor, and provide post-partum care for mama and baby.
Seems like there’s a lot to learn about both Pilates and acupuncture. Do you offer classes or events?
We do! We offer Classes and Events that focus on specific aspects of Chinese medicine, Pilates, and other interesting health-related topics.
These events are great introductions and ways to deepen your understanding and practice. You’ll get the resources you need to make the information part of your life; you’ll be amazed at the difference!
We also extend ourselves into the community, teaching classes and workshops, and doing volunteer work. We believe so strongly in the importance of kids being involved in physical activity and learning to love their bodies; our support of the Boys and Girls Club and Girls on the Run helps bring this to life for kids!
